Full Nokia N8 review. The most powerful Symbian smartphone. just a great phone Nokia n8 where is the memory card

The Nokia N8 is one of those phones that can be considered perfect until you encounter something “even more perfect”. It seems that there is not much to complain about, but in the process of getting to know the model, the acrid taste of the "belated" announcement does not pass. Nokia would hurry up with the release of the N8 for a year - there would be no price for this handset.

A detailed list of characteristics in our catalog:.

IXBT TV webcast, which shows and tells about the functionality of the Nokia N8 smartphone, which we will not focus on in this review, so as not to repeat:

Nokia N8 comes with a charger, USB cable, HDMI cable, silicone case and wired headset and manuals.

Exterior

Nokia N8 is distinguished by its design ... so classic for communicators that you won't immediately understand where to start the description. You can, for example, - from the button on the front panel. If you pull a silicone cover over the tube, the button becomes almost invisible, despite the fact that in normal mode it periodically winks at the user with a backlit rim.

The dimensions of the model will seem familiar to those who have ever used communicators of the mid-2000s. On the one hand, the phone is not large: the large display could not fit within the model. On the other hand, it is not that small: even in a jacket pocket, the device will become a serious burden because of the chubby body.

Separate words are deserved by the silicone case, which can protect the device from scratches, excess moisture, shock when dropped. This uncomplicated accessory will also protect from prying eyes: in the case, the smartphone becomes not very beautiful. By the way, silicone is a completely non-slip material, and therefore the “dressed” N8 holds very reliably in the hand. By the way, recklessly located in the front pocket of jeans, the phone will successfully turn it inside out the first time you take it out.

If you remove the cover, the device may seem quite nice. There was no room in it for exotic solutions of designers, and therefore the model looks very strict and cultural. The body of the N8 is cast and gives the impression of something very reliable: no creaks or a wiggle of the back cover. Of course, such a solution also has an obvious drawback of a permanent battery, but who in these days of overflowing landfills would think about replacing a used battery in an old phone instead of buying a new one?

The "back" of the phone, nevertheless, has its purpose: it is here on a small elevation that the lens of a 12-megapixel camera with a xenon flash is located, as well as the main "music" speaker of the smartphone.

The front panel of the phone is mostly occupied by a capacitive touchscreen display. Its resolution is small: 360 × 640 pixels with a diagonal of 3.5 inches. The model uses an AMOLED matrix, so the phone gives a bright contrasting picture. Under the common glass with the display is a camera lens for video calls and a proximity sensor.

On the right side of the case, there are a lot of hardware controls. Here you will find a speaker volume joystick (it works only during a conversation and listening to a player or radio), a lock lever, and a camera button.

On the top there is a button to turn on the device. Exactly so - in diminutive form, because she is very small and, judging by the difficulty of finding her, very shy. Here, at the top, there is an HDMI port for connecting to a home theater and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

On the left edge, there are covers for the MicroSD memory card and SIM card slots. By the way, if you think that such a position of the SIM card implies the possibility of its hot swapping, then you are deeply mistaken: when the card is moved, the phone restarts the system.

And finally, the bottom line. There is a connector for a power supply, an eyelet for a lanyard and the inscription "Made in Finland", which speaks of a rare assembly of European origin these days.

Communications and networking

Nokia N8 is equipped with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless modules. The WLAN settings allow you to enable automatic search for all available networks online: in fact, you can simply select the desired network from the menu at any time, without spending time searching for available points. This behavior of the phone does not differ in rationality (in relation to battery resources), but, nevertheless, this mode is enabled by default.

The Bluetooth interface offers a standard set of settings (on / off, access level, name), as well as the ability to enable remote access to the SIM card.

The process of setting up the USB connection turned out to be quite obvious and convenient: through the menu, you can select one of several options, "sharpened" for a specific task. Options include: Nokia Ovi Suite (for managing your Ovi library from your computer), Mass storage (like a regular USB flash drive), transferring media files (synchronizing with Windows Media Player or Nokia Ovi) and connecting your PC to the network (for operating your phone as a 3G modem ).

The smartphone has a GPS module and its own routing software. The phone finds its coordinates very quickly. But the navigation program "Maps" cannot be praised: information about the roads in it is downloaded from the network and has an extremely large scale (practically, only the main transport arteries of cities are displayed).

Phone settings

The first thing the new smartphone owner will face is the menu search process. The author of this article still remembers with a smile 5 minutes of acquaintance with the pipe, when over and over again, instinctively clicking on the "Options" menu in the lower left corner of the main screen, I ended up in a gloomy list of four items (See Open applications, Change main screen , Offline Widgets, Guide). Nothing more suitable for the role of the main menu was noticed, and the only hardware button of the handset was skillfully hidden under a silicone case and was not noticed at all.

Well, our process of getting to know the device began with ... a guide, no matter how shameful it is to admit this to a mobile phone tester in Russia. The only excuse here is that the reason for opening this menu item was banal curiosity: we have not seen anything like this in similar phones (at least in such prominent places).

The guide turned out to be lush, spreading and spreading like a century-old oak tree. Literally every smallest step, every breath of the user towards the handset has been carefully and with dignity considered by a technical writer from Nokia.

However, if we return to the topic of the main menu and still talk about its location, then everything turned out to be very simple: we press the hardware key and a screen with several icons appears, displaying the main software capabilities of the smartphone.

Among the main menu icons there are: Calendar, Contacts, Music player, Internet, Messages, Photos, Store (downloading applications from the OVI service), Maps, Video clips, Settings, Internet TV, Applications (all programs that do not fit on the main menu screen). The list, as you can see, is not very long, and therefore it fits on one screen without requiring flipping.

The options menu consists of Profiles, Themes, Phone, Application manager, Call, Communication and Application settings. Here, exploring all the items in search of something interesting, we found a very interesting thing in the "Communication" menu: an FM transmitter. Precisely the transmitter: you can set any arbitrary frequency and broadcast your playlist records on it through the media player. This function works at a short distance (up to 2 meters) and may be useful for motorists.

Among other interesting points, the developers' attention to the phone's operating modes aroused particular interest. With all the abundance and variety of profiles, the user has the opportunity to create their own, fine-tuning the phone's reaction to every conceivable signal.

SMS: write and read

The messages menu is pretty standard, except for a separate item "Conversations", as well as the location of delivery reports in a separate folder.

A new message is entered in a separate window consisting of two fields: the recipient's phone number and text. To enter a number, you can use both your own memory and a virtual numeric keypad, as well as a contact book (the button for calling the address book is located at the very bottom and in the mode of manual number input is hidden under the virtual keyboard).

Message input is possible in two handset positions: portrait or landscape. By holding the phone upright, you are using a virtual semblance of a classic mobile keyboard. Placing your smartphone horizontally will enable the QWERTY keyboard. By the way, the handset can only rotate in one direction (counterclockwise): the Nokia N8 ignores clockwise or upside down rotation.

You can attach images, video or audio clips, slides to outgoing messages, you can create voice, video or audio recordings directly from the message editor, and send ready-made templates, notes or your own business card.

Reading SMS is available both in classic mode and in dialogue format. The first allows the user to decrease or increase the font of the message, and the second - to open the interlocutor's card or add additional recipients.

Contacts and calls

The smartphone allows you to use both the handset's own memory and the SIM card as a notebook.

The set of fields for a new contact is quite large: Name, Surname, Mobile, Phone, Email, Address, Image, Ringtone, Video call, Internet phone, Organization, Position, Synchronization type.

As for the contact groups, it is proposed to create them yourself according to your taste. However, the "set" of parameters for the group is one single name, so you won't get around with the settings here.

In the course of work, an original feature was discovered: at the moment when the overwhelming majority of all phones, when clicking on a contact's number, opens a dialog box with the question: "Dial this number?" - Nokia N8 is already starting to dial it, displaying a familiar conversation interface on the screen. At first, such a sparkling reaction is a little scary, but after a couple of days it becomes habitual.

The magazine turned out to be standard: three tabs for missed, dialed and received numbers. They are displayed in chronological order without repeating names, that is, each newly dialed contact is moved to the top of the list, and not duplicated.

As already mentioned, the manufacturer offers many profiles for the phone to work: Normal, Silent, Meeting, Outdoor, Pager, Standalone. You can supplement them with your own settings.

Business applications

Business applications in the Nokia N8 are scattered across all menu levels. In the root directory, we found a calendar and an Internet browser, in the applications menu we found a whole "Office" folder, a separate mail client and creating notes.

The calendar can serve as a daily planner: here you can create all kinds of records of meetings, deeds and other important events. The note editor allows adding an arbitrary text entry to the phone's memory.

The Internet browser deserves separate words, which can rightfully be recognized ... one of the most inconvenient, which is especially offensive in the context of a serious smartphone of 2010 release. However, judging by the Ovi app store, Opera Mobile is a success with users, so the N8 owner shouldn't have problems surfing the Web.

Office suite includes: File manager, Dictionary, QuickOffice, ZIP archiver, Calculator, AdobePDF, voice message reader and Voice recorder. Original and strange, but true: the stopwatch was not found on the smartphone.

Entertainment

Media content is controlled by applications: Music Player, Photos, Video clips, Internet TV, Photo or video editing, Radio. There is also its own Ovi store client and a separate link to the music of the same service.

The music player has the usual organization today: music is loaded into the music library, scanned and displayed by artist, album and other meta-information. As such, we did not find a music browser, so to create a collection of different artists you will have to sweat a little by specifying a common name for the album.

The photo editor in the phone will entertain its owner with the opportunity to make fun of friends in photos, distorting them with funny smiles and other expressions of emotion.

The option described in the previous paragraph may also appeal to users because there is not a single pre-installed game in the smartphone! Perhaps, in the age of Internet content for every taste and color downloaded in a matter of seconds, the lack of games will not be a big problem, but it was not at all superfluous to include at least a couple of banal standard games in the standard set.

Camera performance can be described as “acceptable” if you are going to use your phone to take photo notes on blogs. For more serious purposes, the camera will not work because of the unresponsive shutter button, blurry autofocus and extremely high noise levels when shooting indoors.

If you support in your hands, you will not be able to part with him for a long time. It seems to captivate with its elegance and beauty of design with the clarity of the display (16,777,216 colors), which does not fade even in the sun. The performance of a smartphone at a high level with an ARM 11 processor with a frequency of 680Mhz is quite enough to ensure fast work with applications. Concerning camera Nokia N8-00 then he has one of the best among all phone models. 12MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics and powerful xenon flash allow the smartphone to take quite professional pictures, both during the day and at night. Video footage of Nokia N8-00 in high quality HD format with a resolution of 1200 by 720 pixels can be easily watched on a TV screen. The smartphone is powered by a 1200 mAh BL-4D battery, which will allow the phone to work 12 hours of talk time and 390 hours of standby. The smartphone is available in five colors red, black, green, silver and blue. The large memory of the smartphone 16GB and microSD 32GB will allow you to transfer full movies for viewing without additional re-encoding. Nokia N8-00 is equipped with a receiver GPS and free maps from Nokia. For lovers of mobile games it will be pleasant to play on the large and bright 3.5-inch display. It is probably impossible to describe here how pleasant it is to use the N8-00 phone, you have to hold it in your hands to appreciate its magnificence!

Phone advantages:

1) Battery. Holds charging for a VERY long time. I occasionally call, write SMS, listen to music, take pictures (without the Internet) - it may not charge for a week! And if you also turn on the power saving mode - so generally! When it drops to a critical level of charge, it lives for a rather long time, then it beeps for another 4 hours and only then turns off.
2) Housing. Very durable - I fell more than once (on parquet, on concrete, and on corners) - it does not turn off when it falls, continues to work as usual. The toughest landings left small dents in the corners (from a maximum of 1mm), but the paint did not peel off.
2) Case included in the kit. It is not its very presence that pleases, but its quality - it looks like rubber (not plastic), easily bends, puts on, but most importantly, it absolutely does not slip! That is, you can not be afraid to put your phone on a car torpedo, for example. However, in such clothes it is very problematic to squeeze it into your pocket.
3) Sound + speakers. Bass can be heard when using the most common in-ear headphones. I'm not a musician, and the quality suits me.
4) Alarm clock + bell. You can go deaf at maximum volume. There is an option to gradually increase the volume. The alarm can be set on certain days. Their number is unlimited. When a call comes in, and the phone was locked at that time, the lock is turned off by itself, and the phone makes it possible to immediately press "Answer". After the end of the call, the blocking is activated automatically.
5) Photo. The quality is good. There is an opportunity to photograph, so to speak, in two forms: when the photograph is obtained a) completely and the whole screen, b) the size of a regular photograph. Shooting mode is activated by pressing the button on the body.
6) Use. Convenient menu button, never turned on on its own. It will not be able to unlock itself. 3 screens with customizable widgets. Multiple calendars can be created. There are no plugs for the mini-usb input and for headphones - they are not needed, they are not dusty, nothing falls out. The headphones fit tightly - maybe even hang on them.

Disadvantages of the phone:

1) Sound + speakers. Bass is lost without headphones.
2) There is no timer, stopwatch. The calculator contains only basic functions. Recording from the voice recorder is hard to hear.
3) Reads files .pdf and.doc very poorly. I don't know how it happens, but it is simply impossible to read from these formats.
4) In my opinion, it focuses the image for a long time, longer than that of friends with Samsung and iPhones. In a room setting, photographs are obtained with an orange tint.
5) Slows down, can think about the team for 5 seconds. Sometimes, with very harsh use, when I turn on, switch, cancel tasks very quickly, I can think about it.
6) In the cold, it may not perceive touch - you need to warm the phone and fingers so that they can see each other))
7) I don't play, so I can't say anything about applications

The most anticipated device of this year among Nokia fans was and remains the N8 smartphone. Large touch screen, die-cast metal body, 12 megapixel camera with autofocus, new operating system Symbian ^ 3 - all this about him. We now have the opportunity to tell in all the details about the most modern and functional Nokia smartphone. So what is this Nokia N8?

No other device from the Finnish company has generated as much controversy in the press as a smartphone. Nokia N8... Some scolded him, others swore their love for him, and still others soberly assessed his capabilities. And so the sales of this device began.

Nokia N8 has tried to bring together all the advanced ideas inherent in a modern mobile phone. Indeed, the device has something to surprise. it robust metal body, large capacitive touchscreen, 12 megapixel camera with autofocus, HD mode, video playback without conversion, free navigation and more. At the same time, some experts criticized the interfaces of the Symbian ^ 3 operating system, which runs the smartphone. They found them too simple and outdated. Is this so we will try to find out in our test review.

Design, construction.

id = "sub1">

Nokia N8 has a memorable and moderately strict appearance... Although what rigor can we talk about if five body colors are available: dark gray, silver, blue, green and orange... As you can see in the photo, our editorial office was visited by a device in a dark gray design.

Small thickness emphasizes the severity of the lines. The 12 Mpix camera module, which protrudes slightly above the rear surface of the device, could not fit into such dimensions. But more about it later.

The body is made of cast anodized aluminum sheet coated with paint... It looks almost like a perfect rectangle, the ends at the top and bottom are beveled, rather than rounded, as is often the case. This form enhances the perception of the model as whole and unified. The feeling of solidity, by the way, is not deceiving. Only small areas above and below were made of plastic, because antennas, transmitters and a navigation module had to be installed somewhere.

It is worth noting that the metal case is attached to the board of the device itself using two miniature screws. They can be seen on the sides of the Nokia N8. This means that you cannot open the battery compartment and, for example, pull out the battery just like that. An appropriate screwdriver is required. But for 98% of users, there is absolutely no need to open the touchscreen. If someone is worried about the inability to turn off the smartphone without removing the battery, then this is not a problem. Hard reboot or the device can be turned off by long pressing (8-10 seconds) buttons on and off the device. We will tell you more about chips and special keys later.

Most, if not all, of the front face of the Nokia N8 is occupied by a 3.5-inch touchscreen. Above it is a speaker for voice calls. In the upper left corner you can see the lens of the built-in front camera for video calls, as well as a light sensor and an accelerometer. The first adjusts the intensity of the display backlight. The second allows you to transform the picture on the display depending on the position of the device in space [landscape or portrait orientation of the image].

There is only one button under the screen "Menu". Long pressing it brings up the application manager; pressing in any application returns to standby mode.

On the right side surface there is a volume control button and a display lock slider, as well as a camera key. Slots for a sim card and memory are located on the left side of the Nokia N8. In the same place, but just below there is a microUSB connector for connecting to a computer or connecting flash drives and hard drives. Next to it is a small LED that glows when the device is charging. There is a hole on the bottom for connecting a standard charger.

At the top of the N8 is HDMI connector for connecting to a TV, an on / off key, and a 3.5 mm audio jack for connecting headphones.

The camera with a 12 megapixel sensor with Carl Zeiss optics is located on the back of the touchscreen. It has autofocus. The xenon flash indicates the gravity of the situation. She's here, obviously, not just for the sake of a tick =))

There is only one external speaker in Nokia N8, and it is located next to the camera, on a ledge. Its quality and volume are at a decent level. Melodies are played in high quality and at high volume. The external speaker seems especially advantageous when playing NFS Shift. Well, you guess what I mean. Mp3 tunes sound good too. The only difficulty arises if you place the smartphone with the speaker on any loose surface, fabric or clothing.

I repeat once again that the build quality and case reliability deserve the highest marks. There is nothing to find fault with. Nokia N8 is assembled at a factory in Finland.

Screen. Graphic capabilities.

id = "sub2">

Nokia N8 has a large 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen display. It has a resolution of 360x640 pixels (16: 9 - nHD), displays 16.7 million colors. The display is made using AMOLED technology: a large margin of brightness, high contrast, colors are juicy and clear.The available matrix provides viewing angles close to maximum. Even in the power saving mode (at minimum brightness), the picture will be very lively and juicy. When exposed to direct sunlight, the screen fades a little, but remains easy to read.

As noted earlier, the Nokia N8 has a capacitive screen. If you go into technical features, then the surface of the display is covered with a special oxide, which reacts to contact with fingers by achieving an electrical potential difference. It should be noted that neither a stylus nor other accessories are suitable for work. But this type of screen offers a number of advantages. First of all, no strong pressure required. The screen responds even to a light touch. Secondly, multitouch support, thanks to which the ergonomics of device control is improved. You just need to make a “pinch-to-zoom” movement with your fingers to zoom in on the picture. The N8 is the first Finnish touchscreen to support multitouch.

In general, the display is a strong point of the device at the level of other advanced models.

Keyboard and information input

id = "sub3">

Entering information, as well as writing texts and dialing numbers is done using the touch screen. Thanks to the gentle vibration, any user gets a response when pressing the touch keys.

There are two schemes for typing texts in Nokia N8. First, classic mobile phone keyboard... That is, you can type both numbers and letters. In this mode, the T9 function works. This type of keyboard is automatically activated in portrait mode (portrait).

Second circuit, full screen QWERTY keyboardthat works only in landscape orientation (landscape). In this mode, the buttons are large and allow you to type text without problems. It is convenient to work with the keyboard. The only drawback that upset me was a very long chain of navigation through the menu in order to change the input language. There is simply no quick button for changing languages.

Menu. Interface and settings

id = "sub4">

Nokia N8 interface is built on the updated operating system Symbian ^ 3, to which, according to Nokia itself, more than 250 improvements were added compared to previous versions. In fact, this is a polished platform that has been used on and off.

In the future, Symbian ^ 3 updates of certain applications, service programs and utilities will occur automatically without any special Service Packs. If you make the update automatic in the settings, then when such an opportunity arises, the smartphone will offer to install the appropriate service package. During our testing, one critical update was installed this way.

It is worth noting that the changes in the OS, of course, only benefited. So, in the standby mode, the user has access to three desktops with the ability to add numerous program icons or widgets. Moving around the screens is done either by simply scrolling or by clicking on the three dots at the bottom of the display.

As for the widgets, the maximum number that can be set in one screen is six. Each widget is assigned a rectangular shape that cannot be resized. This layout does not allow the full potential of widgets, some of them could be much more informative.

In order to customize the widgets, you need to call the context menu with a long press on any place on the desktop, or do it through the function menu. Thus, changing the layout of the desktop can be beyond recognition.

The desktop is displayed as in horizontal and vertical orientation... The position of the widgets, respectively, can be six in one row, or three in two rows.

In standby mode, the user sees the main desktop, which displays information about signal reception, battery charge. Next to them you can see the time, date. At the very bottom there are three touch buttons: Features, Switching between desktops and Dialing.

In addition, the Nokia N8 has pop-up status menu, which can be activated by clicking on the upper right corner. The status menu is represented by three icons: "Communication" (settings wi-Fi connections, Bluetooth, 3G), "Alarm", "Power". The status menu simplifies access to some of the useful functions of the device.

The main menu can be accessed by pressing a single button under the display. The main menu is represented by 12 menu items, as before.

The touch screen operation is simple. You click on the item you need once and get into it. The field for entering information is pressing, and the keyboard appears immediately. In all menus, you can turn the phone over, then a large QWERTY keyboard will appear.

The user has the ability to rearrange all menu items with each other. To do this, you must press "Options" - "Arrange". Then you can start moving shortcuts.

Like the previous version, Symbian ^ 3 is multitasking. The manager of running programs can be called up by long pressing the menu button. Moreover, all programs appear in miniatures. In order to close them, you need to click on the "cross" in the thumbnail window.

To open the manager of running programs it is necessary to long press the central button under the display. Applications are displayed as icons in two columns. You can close both all applications and individual ones. The positive aspect is clarity, easier navigation between applications. The disadvantages include fewer icons simultaneously displayed on the display.

Of the useful functions, it is worth noting the ability to turn the phone over to muffle the sound when making a call, alarm clock or an event from the calendar. This does not change the profile of the device. But the speakerphone mode can be configured in such a way that during a call, placing it on the table, the speakerphone mode is automatically activated. In addition, you can set a clock on the screen saver, which will be effectively displayed in sleep mode.

Each user can customize the operation of the phone and individual applications, personalize the smartphone interface. This is done from the menu "Options". This subsection includes all options related to working with the network. cellular communication, wireless interfaces, including bluetooth and Wi-Fi, data synchronization. In addition, settings for profiles, display, time, menus and widgets, security, phone memory and other service information are also available here.

Telephone functions

id = "sub5">

To start dialing, you must press in standby mode, press the button "Call" (right). At the same time, from here you can access your contacts and call log.

IN "Contacts" kept detailed information about numbers and subscribers. You yourself can choose one or another variant of data presentation. The list is displayed by names, to the left of them is the subscriber's photo and phone number; to view the details of a contact, you need to open it. Any graphic file, as well as your photos or videos, can be used as a name picture.

The records are sorted in order: first, all contacts are in Russian, then all names are in English. The phone memory stores about 2000 names with all the numbers and data filled in. Search for contacts is carried out character by character. That is, you first enter the first character, then the second of those that are available, and so on, until the search is reduced to a minimum. It seemed to me a very handy tool.

In point "Messages" contains all options and options for working with SMS, MMS. There is a mode of displaying messages in the classic form, and in the form of a chat on the Apple iPhone. The settings for working with all types of messages are also concentrated here. A unique function is sending a message at a specified time. After writing a message, you can indicate at what time and on what day to send it to the addressee.

In addition to the standard lists, the item appeared "Conversations", where the correspondence is arranged in the form of a chat of two subscribers.

Email, internet and social services

id = "sub6">

Email is built in e-mail clientwith support / IMAP4 / SMTP / APOP protocols]. This is the second version of Nokia Mail 2.2.0. The main difference that the company is talking about is the emergence of html support in letters.

The New Mailbox Wizard allows you to quickly set up your mailbox for work. If you use a well-known service, for example, Gmail or Yahoo or some other familiar system, you must specify your password, email address, and that's it. From now on it will be possible to work with the box. In addition, there is the possibility of configuring inside corporate mail, including via a VPN connection.

Standard internet browser, of course, not the best, so it was almost immediately replaced by Opera Mobile (installed for free from the OVI Store). It provides full support for WAP resources and other functions. You can call a panel with frequently used functions: a list of links to visited resources, map display, page reload and search. But I personally like Opera many times more.

Access to social services can be configured from the app "Social networks"which allows you to manage your accounts on the most popular social resources: Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. The interface and functionality of the client is satisfactory, it is convenient to use it. Updates can be displayed in the appropriate widget directly on the home screen. The client's weak side is the loss of status if it is impossible to update it (due to network loss, for example). It is also not entirely clear why the developers installed such a thin and because of this not very aesthetic font. If you don't like this application, you can find many alternative free and paid clients in the OVI store.

Office Applications

id = "sub7">

For office applications, I would classify the to-do planner, calendar, programs for viewing office documents, and book readers. All this is in the Nokia N8.

"The calendar"allows you to view events, both by date and by time and action. The program is a high-quality planner-organizer, all in one. All events can be divided into four groups with corresponding fields: "Meeting", "Memo", "Anniversary" and "Business".

In point "Clock" two utilities are concentrated at once: alarm clock and world time. World clock displays the time for the selected cities.

"File Manager"- built-in memory manager. It displays the contents of the phone memory, memory card or external drives in the form of folders. The program allows you to rename, move and run various files. The settings have the ability to display folders in a list or in thumbnails.

Among the installed applications, the most interesting is Quick Office... The program allows you to view, but not create (you need to buy a license from the OVI Store) files in MS Office format (for example, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint) on your phone. Also included are Adobe Acrobat (PDF), archiver, English-Russian dictionary and calculator.

Musical possibilities

id = "sub8">

In Symbian ^ 3, which is installed on Nokia N8, the music player has been updated. While this is hardly noticeable in the vertical orientation of the screen, in the horizontal orientation you will find a lot of interesting things. AND the player's interface strongly resembles that of the Apple iPhone... Graphic track covers, descriptions, submenus look extremely attractive and modern.

In general, the music player supports mp3 files with various bit rates, including high ones, as well as WMA, AAC, eAAC, eAAC +, AMR-NB, AMR-WB. When playing a song, the display shows information about the track, album, artist. Management is clear, anyone can figure it out. There is support for random or sequential file playback. Sorting by artist, album, genre, composer is available.

You can minimize the player and continue working with other applications. The player's interface is specially adapted for the capabilities of the touch display. The center buttons are responsible for playback settings. Long press on the scroll bar allows you to rewind a specific track.

In addition to the player in Nokia N8 there is also an FM radio... The user can search for radio stations in the range from 87.5 MHz to 108 MHz. There is an automatic tuning of all stations, for individual channels you can assign your own name. The radio also works in speakerphone mode. The radio runs in the background. The RDS function shows not only the title of the radio station in the general list at the top, but also other information. You can record radio broadcasts in the phone memory.

Camera. Photo and video capabilities

id = "sub9">

The built-in camera is one of the trump cards of the model. Nokia N8 has a 12 megapixel camera with 2x digital zoom and autofocus. Large 1 / 1.83 "optical format image sensor, 1.75 micron dot size. Other Features:

 • 16: 9 full screen viewfinder with easy-to-use touchscreen options;
 • Xenon flash
 • Face detection software
 • Focal length: 5.9mm
 • 2x magnification (digital) for images
 • 3x zoom (digital) for video
 • Second camera for video communication (VGA, 640 x 480 pixels), image and video capture
 • ISO 100, 400, 800, Auto
 • Focusing from 10 centimeters (macro), from 20 to infinity in automatic mode
 • Face detection in the picture
 • Red-eye reduction

Volume buttons are responsible for zoom in / out. Auto contrast allows you to get good picture quality on a bright sunny day. In manual mode, ISO settings are available at 100, 200, 400, 800... The following shooting modes are available: custom, macro, portrait, landscape, night mode, sports, face detection.

In terms of image quality and image clarity, the Nokia N8 camera bypasses most other mobile phones. But it’s impossible to call the pictures from the phone better than those taken with full-fledged cameras.

The phone supports video recording in mpeg4 format for maximum resolution, and in the settings you can specify whether the video will be recorded with or without sound. All settings are comparable to those for photos, but video resolutions are different, plus effects are supported. Maximum resolution - 1280x720 pixels, there are also 720x480 pixels (30 frames), or a resolution of 640x480 pixels (30 frames). Two additional resolutions - 320x240 and 176x144 pixels.

The video recorded is not bad. It looks great on a phone screen, and it looks great on a computer.

Photos can be viewed from the menu "A photo"... Pictures are displayed in the form of thumbnails, the list opens very quickly, there are no delays even with a large number of pictures or images. You can flip through photos in the gallery.

The built-in player is responsible for viewing video files in Nokia N8. It supports codecs support DivX, H.264, MPEG-4, VC-1, Sorenson Spark VGA 15fps, Real video 10 QVGA 30fps. Video Streaming: H.264, Flash Lite 4, Flash 10 Compatible for Video, On2 VP6, Sorenson Spark.

It is worth noting, the smartphone allows you to watch movies without any problems, for example in the .avi formatas well as HD video. N8 can show videos not only on its own screen. For their transmission to an external large monitor, the device has an HDMI interface. The smartphone is connected to the TV without additional settings: as soon as both parts of the wire are connected, a copy of the phone screen appears on the external display.

App and Music Store

id = "sub10">

Missing programs, utilities and widgets can be downloaded from OVI store... The app store is organized in the same way as the Apple Store. All applications are divided into categories: programs, games, themes, videos, music, etc., there are lists of the most popular free and paid applications, keyword search.

Similarly, you can buy and download music and video content. To work with the Internet service from your computer, you will need to install OVI Player.

Navigation capabilities

id = "sub11">

Nokia N8 uses the package as a basic navigation program OVI Cards... This application can be launched from the phone's Maps menu. The latest updates and maps are available for download on the developers website. It should be noted that detailed maps of Russian cities are available here.

When the OVI Maps program is launched, for some time, information is downloaded from the operator's base stations about the location, current time, and maps are also loaded. After receiving coordinates you can determine where you are at the moment. In the program menu there is a search for objects by text information, address, geographic location, history, contacts stored in the phone. All objects on the map are displayed with a corresponding icon. It is possible to display street names and other information in Latin. There is support for searching in Cyrillic.

The user can choose the option of displaying the map - 2D or 3D picture, day or night mode. In addition, the option of displaying "satellite view" has been added, it is similar to what we see in Google Maps.

When navigating in big bold the arrows show the pre-marked route.Among the pleasant features, you can find information about the weather, the situation on nearby roads, etc.

In general, navigation using OVI Maps is similar to other navigation services.

Memory and speed of work.

id = "sub12">

For storing files and other data in the internal memory of Nokia N8 there is 175 MB (Disk "C") and 16 GB (Disk "D"). In addition, thanks to the microSD card slot, you can expand the memory by an additional 32 GB. This will obviously be enough.

The package contains an adapter for connecting external USB memory devices (for example, flash drives). By connecting a USB flash drive, you can copy data from it to the internal memory of the phone, run a music or video file. External storage is visible in the file manager as an additional drive. When trying to connect an external device to the Nokia N8 hDD, connection failed. Apparently, this is due to lack of food.

Nokia N8 has a 680 MHz ARM11 processor, rAM 256 MB. In addition, the phone has a dedicated DNSe chip, which is responsible for sound processing. The interface works smartly without any freezes. It is indeed the fastest Symbian OS smartphone.

Communication capabilities.

id = "sub13">

In addition to the standard connection of Nokia N8 to a computer via microUSB, there is support for Bluetooth 3.0. This touchscreen is one of the first devices with bluetooth version 3.0, also called High Speed. When transferring files to other devices that support this technology, Wi-Fi 802.11 n is used, and the theoretical transfer speed is about 24 Mbps. Bluetooth enables wireless connection of peripheral devices such as A2DP / AVRCP stereo headsets.

When connected to a USB port, there are several connection options: Data Storage, OVI Suite, Print & Media... "Data Storage" (Mass Storage USB) - the mode of displaying the phone's memory as a flash drive. OVI Suite - work with the OVI Suite package to access and synchronize data on the phone. "Print and Multimedia" - photo printing, MTP mode.

The model supports packet data transmission using GPRS and EDGE class 33 technologies, as well as third generation UMTS networks with HSPA support. The phone can be used as a modem that provides the speed of incoming traffic 10.2 Mbps.

Nokia N8 supports the standard Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n... Maximum speed up to 54 and 11 Mbit / s incoming and outgoing traffic, respectively. In standby mode, the user can launch the Wi-Fi networks wizard. It can search for them in the background and, if necessary, connect to such networks.

Duration of work.

id = "sub14">

Nokia N8 has a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 1200 mAh... According to the manufacturer itself, the device can work in talk mode from 5.5 to 12 hours in talk mode depending on the network and up to 390 hours in standby mode.

In our testing, with the number of calls 25-30 minutes a day, listening to the player and browsing the Internet for an hour, the device worked for two days. With less use of the phone, as well as using the power saving mode, you can count on three days of work for sure. Is charging accumulator battery slightly more than two hours.

Nokia N8 deserves the title best multimedia phone on Symbian OS... The touchscreen can really be interesting. This is a high-quality assembly, a metal body, fast interfaces, multitouch, rich functionality and an adequate price.

Although Symbian is very popular in some countries around the world, this platform is not very well known in our country, as it lags behind competitors in usability and functionality. The Symbian 3 operating system is a good attempt to remedy these shortcomings, and Nokia's N8 is the first smartphone to run the updated OS. The much needed improvements are visible at a glance - a simplified touch interface and enhanced multimedia capabilities.

Nokia N8 - device specifications

The N8 is also one of the best camera phones on the market today, offering good call quality and long battery life. However, it still falls short of the competition in a number of areas, including ease of use, navigation and integrated services. All this, combined with the expensive $ 549 price tag, does not make it a mainstream gadget. While the Nokia N8 is a decent smartphone, consumers are more likely to choose Android or iPhone devices.

Design

For the most part, Nokia always makes quality hardware and the N8 is no exception. As soon as you pick it up, you will notice a sturdy yet beautiful case with metal accents and a glass display. The gadget has the following dimensions: 4.47 inches high, 2.32 inches wide and 0.51 inches thick. These are good dimensions for a smartphone: it is large enough to have a large screen, but at the same time thin and compact enough to be easily carried and held in the palm of your hand. There is a slightly domed camera on the back, which stands out a little from the streamlined design, but it does not create inconvenience.

Nokia N8 screen

The front of the phone is decorated with a 3.5-inch. With 640x360 resolution and support for 16.7 million colors, the display looks bright and clear. However, the image doesn't look as sharp as some of the latest smartphones. Compared to devices such as the HTC Evo 4G and the Samsung Galaxy S series, text and images do not appear as harmoniously, and pixels are more visible. It doesn't get in the way of using the phone, but you will definitely notice the difference.

The display offers a built-in accelerometer and finger-click zoom support. The performance of both functions is a bit inconsistent. Sometimes the response may be instantaneous, while other times there may be a slight delay. This also applies to the operation of the touchscreen in general. Scrolling through lists and desktop panels isn't quite as smooth as some other rival phones.

For typing, the screen displays a keyboard in portrait and landscape modes, but the QWERTY option is only available in landscape orientation. This means that if you want to enter any messages in portrait orientation, you will have to type them using the alphanumeric keypad.

Other controls

In addition to the touchscreen, the device has a couple of controls to help you navigate and perform other functions. There is one button below the display that takes you to the main menu or to the main screen if you are in another application. On the right side is the paired volume rocker, lock switch and camera activation / capture button.

What else is there There is a power button, an HDMI port and a 3.5mm headphone jack on the top of the device. On the left side are the SIM and microSD slots, as well as a micro-USB port. On the back you'll find a 12MP camera with xenon flash. Curiously, unlike other phones, Nokia N8 does not have a replaceable battery. Thus, the battery cannot be replaced.

Completeness

The N8 comes with a good range of accessories, including a charger, USB cable, HDMI, USB On-The-Go adapter, wired stereo headset, and reference material. Although the charger has an international adapter, the phone can be equipped with a micro-USB charger. N8 is available in five colors: dark gray, blue, green, orange, silver white. In addition, you can choose any color for your Nokia N8 if you want.

User interface

One of the main drawbacks of the Symbian S60 platform is its poor user interface. Ascetic appearance, archaic menu and not very convenient navigation - all this contributed to great disappointment among users. Symbian 3 corrects a number of these shortcomings and makes the N8 mega-modern compared to previous Nokia smartphones. However, it still lags behind the competition in a number of features and amenities. In order to change anything in your device, you need a security code for your Nokia N8.

Symbian 3 now offers a unified user interface model, so you no longer have to go through multiple steps to complete a simple task or exit a menu. This unified system made the phone easier to use, but it still lacks quick access to functions within the application. For example, to reply to an email message on your Nokia N8, you must first select Options and then only enable reply. On Android, a similar option is located on the same email page.

The home screen currently consists of three panels that can be customized with a variety of widgets, including messages, social media, music player, favorite contacts, RSS feeds, and more. Widgets can provide you with a quick view of the latest information, and if you want to view more, you can tap on it to launch a separate application.

The main menu largely repeats the previous models, representing a grid from your applications (you can change the display view to a list). A useful feature is present - if you hold down the menu key at the bottom of the screen for a long time, it will arrange the icons of all your running applications. From there, you can scroll through the list to switch between tasks or exit the application.

Features:

The Nokia N8 offers hands-free calling, speed dialing, conference calling, voice dialing, vibrating alert, text and multimedia chat messages, and more. The phone's address book is limited only by the amount of available memory; only a SIM card can provide additional contacts. The directory has a separate item for saving several phone numbers, work and home addresses, e-mail, birthday and other important information in each contact. You can also assign a photo, group ID or custom ringtone to each contact, which is very convenient according to users.

Unlike devices on other operating systems, Nokia N8 (original) does not automatically sync information from your email and social media accounts. You will have to use features such as Ovi or the ISYNC plugin, which is not very convenient.

The N8 is compatible with several email protocols, including Exchange, Lotus Notes, and POP3 / IMAP, and offers HTML and folder support. At the same time, access to mail options is not always easy and straightforward. For example, if you want to get to your folders, you need to click on the Inbox tab at the top of the screen and then select the one you want from the drop-down list. This is not the biggest problem, but it all goes back to the issue of usability.

Connection

Wireless options are well presented with Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi (802.11b / g / N), GPS, and five-band 3G support (WCDMA 850/900/1700/1900/2100). The WebKit browser integrated into the N8 is pretty decent. It offers support for Flash Lite 4.0 and multiple windows, and the pages open quite quickly. Navigation, however, could be much better based on user feedback. A task as simple as entering a new web address requires launching a separate menu and entering the URL, then clicking Go. It really shouldn't be that hard.

Multimedia

The Nokia N series has always been known for its multimedia capabilities, and the N8 continues that tradition. In Symbian 3, the integrated music player gets a nice bonus in the form of Cover Flow, an interface for viewing music. It offers basic features such as shuffle and repeat modes, on-the-fly playlist creation, and support for MP3, WMA, AAC, eAAC, eAAC +, AMR-NB, and AMR-WB. There is also an FM radio. Since the battery for Nokia N8 is quite powerful, you will be able to watch videos and listen to music for hours on end.

Camera

We can say that the best feature of the N8 is its 12MP camera. Equipped with Carl Zeiss optics, xenon flash and numerous editing options, it delivers excellent image quality. In this part, the smartphone is significantly ahead of its competitors. Images captured with this camera have vibrant and rich colors and crisp details that are not visible in most photographs taken with a phone. The camera is also able to successfully cope with shooting in various environments - indoors, outdoors, on the move (reviews confirm this).

Available applications

Other integrated programs for the Nokia N8 include QuickOffice, PDF reader, ZIP manager, voice recorder, dedicated YouTube app, Maps Ovi service (which offers free navigation). In addition, you can find and download more apps from the Ovi Store. The store catalog contains about 15,000 items. Sure, this is a very small selection compared to the 80,000 apps in the Android Market and the 250,000 apps in iTunes, but Nokia has done a good job refreshing the store's interface. The N8 offers 16GB of internal storage and an expansion slot that accepts cards up to 32GB.
