Equipping ASUS Memo Pad Smart. Tablet for writing and drawing Memo Pad Mobile radio is a built-in FM receiver

At the moment, the market for ten-inch tablets can be called somewhat "overheated". Class B and C brands are attacking eminent flagship models with a rampage of Asian pirates. Here the price is everything! And, nevertheless, the trendsetters, among whom is definitely the ASUS company, have something to offer users, even with this price bacchanalia. How exactly ASUS MeMO Pad FHD 10 can attract us - we will learn from the pre-New Year test.

At Computex in July 2014, where the ME581CL was introduced for the first time, the spec sheet included an Intel Atom Z3580 processor (2.3 GHz). Apparently, something went wrong, and as a result, the tablet went on sale with Intel Atom Z3560 (1.83 GHz). But the difference in performance between these two chips is not big enough to regret abandoning the Z3580. The PowerVR G6430 accelerator built into the processor is responsible for the graphics, and random access memory (LPDDR3) installed 2 GB, and it works in two-channel mode. What level of performance can you expect from this set of components?

Judging by the majority of benchmarks, it is very, very good. There is no doubt about the speed of the processor, as well as video cards. The latter loses only to the powerful graphics accelerator of the nVIDIA Tegra K1 chip (nVIDIA Shield tablet) and PowerVR GXA6850 in the Apple A8X (Apple iPad Air 2). The iPad Mini 3 uses the PowerVR G6430 as our ME581CL, so its graphics performance is about the same. According to the 3DMark 2013 benchmark, ME581CL is slightly faster in Ice Storm Unlimited, slightly behind in Ice Storm Unlimited Graphics, but already twice as fast in Ice Storm Unlimited Physics. In GFXBench 3.0 ME581CL, due to a slightly lower resolution, produces 2 frames per second more, but lags behind by 2 frames in a test independent of the display. Browser benchmarks also showed excellent performance; Google Chrome is recommended for best results. The results below were obtained using a standard browser, which is not so well optimized, but in fact, pages open very quickly in it.

Used by fast eMMC storage, guaranteeing no lag when opening applications and fast system start-up, and 2 GB of RAM is enough for any application and entertainment. You can play any demanding game like Modern Combat 5 - we didn't find any brakes.

In general, the performance is very close to the level of the iPad Mini 3, so if the choice comes between it and our ME581CL, performance cannot be an argument in favor of one or another device. This is very good, it will be possible to choose based on other criteria. If you are interested in the detailed results of all our benchmarks, they are listed below.

A champion at stuffing one device into another. Secondly, all the company's tablets and smartphones that visited our test laboratory definitely deserved attention. Perhaps ASUS gadgets were not perfect, but they were clearly made with intelligence and some signs of humanism. Unfortunately, they were united by one quite expected drawback - the price. Gone are the days when consumers were ready to shell out a thousand "evergreens" for good tablet or smartphone. Therefore, the company had to experiment in an unfamiliar field - to maintain quality, but at the same time to drastically reduce the price.

The first fruits of such experiments were the replenishment of the MeMO Pad line with two tablets: the older, ten-inch, to which this material is devoted, and the younger, seven-inch, which will be discussed some other time. From point of view technical characteristics the novelty is similar to its predecessor, TF300TG, - the screens of the models are the same, the processors are the same. Of the signs of savings, only the downgrade of the main camera from eight megapixels to five and the inability to connect a docking station to the tablet. The cost has dropped significantly - a ten-inch tablet with an IPS-matrix and a quad-core processor from the first-rate manufacturer is being offered, and this is only at the start of sales! It's really hard to refuse such an appetizing offer.

ASUS MeMO Pad Smart - Factory Box

The Taiwanese giant has joined the now popular trend and began to supply its gadgets, in particular the MeMO Pad Smart, in eco-packaging. The step, of course, is commendable. But the emptiness we found inside the box itself is frustrating. The standard package includes only a 2A USB charger, a USB ↔ microUSB cable and documentation. There are no nice little things like headphones in the box. Moreover, even a simple protective film on the display, so that it is not damaged during transportation, and that was not.

⇡ Appearance and ergonomics

As we have already noted, in the new product with the naked eye, there is a similarity with the gadgets of the line Eee Pad Transformer, which is expressed not only in technical terms. Externally, the tablet also brings back warm memories of its predecessors. There is no need to talk about any delights in the finishing of the case - everything is pretty standard. And for an inexpensive tablet, this is rather good.

ASUS MeMO Pad Smart - front panel

From the front panel of MeMO Pad Smart you can't say that we have a new device in front of us. The small ASUS logo in the upper left corner, the webcam shifted to the right, and the well-known proportions of the body - we saw all this, for example, in the Transformer Prime. But, as you know, the devil is in the details.

ASUS MeMO Pad Smart - Sides and Back Panel

In order to save money, ASUS engineers used matte plastic, not metal, as the main body material. At the same time, the tablet turned out to be quite light, it weighs 580 grams. It is pleasant to hold the device in your hands, the gadget does not try to slip out of them. The material used has one drawback - it collects fingerprints with great pleasure and loses its pristine beauty from this. In the middle of the rear panel there is a metal nameplate of the manufacturer, above it there is a peephole for the main camera, and on the sides there are outputs of stereo speakers covered with a protective mesh.

ASUS MeMO Pad Smart - interfaces on the left side

The combined power and lock button of the device is located on its upper end. The volume keys are placed on its right side, and next to them is a 3.5 mm audio jack. The microUSB and microHDMI 1.4a interfaces and the slot for memory cards are located on the left side. The lower edge of the case is empty. The assembly of the tablet leaves a double impression: on the one hand, visually everything is assembled reliably and there is no reason for concern. On the other hand, the plastic creaks a little and noticeably bends under physical pressure, and the notorious colored stains appear on the display. Nevertheless, we did not find any backlash hazardous to the device's life.

ASUS MeMO Pad Smart - Various Colors

MeMO Pad Smart comes in three color options - Crystal White, Midnight Blue and Purplish Pink (color names taken from ASUS official website). The latter will surely appeal to individual representatives of the beautiful half of humanity.

Processor and memory Asus MeMO Pad 7

Tablet Asus MeMO Pad 7 is based on a 4-core intel processor® Atom ™ Z3745 Quad-Core @ 1.86 GHz. The integrated GPU Intel HD Graphics is responsible for the graphics. The amount of RAM is 1 GB, internal - 16 or 32, depending on the modification. About 4 GB of flash memory is occupied by the presented programs. The microSD format slot makes it possible to expand the memory by another 64 GB.
Tablet Asus MeMO Pad 7 is controlled by OS Android 4.4 KitKat with shell ASUS ZenUI.

Display and cameras Asus MeMO Pad 7

The display of the tablet Asus MeMO Pad 7 with a diagonal of 7 "and a resolution of 1280x800 px is made on an IPS TFT matrix with LED backlighting. In artificial lighting and in cloudy weather, the screen demonstrates good color rendering and wide viewing angles, but it fades in the sun, so it becomes necessary to set the maximum brightness in the screen properties. The sensor works without delay up to 10 touches at the same time.

The main 5-megapixel camera of the Asus MeMO Pad 7 tablet is equipped with autofocus and supports 1080 px video. For a modest camera, a full-fledged software with many useful effects was downloaded. For example, the Smart Remove feature allows you to remove unwanted objects from the picture - just touch them with your finger.

Case, interfaces and battery Asus MeMO Pad 7

The back panel of the Asus MeMO Pad 7 is made of matte plastic, on which fingerprints are almost invisible. Due to the roughness of the material, the tablet does not slip in the palm of your hand. The front panel is covered with glass with an oleophobic coating.

At the top of the Asus MeMO Pad 7 tablet there are 2 connectors: 3.5 mm for a headset and micro-USB for connecting to a charger and a computer, as well as a microphone. You can connect a mouse, keyboard and others to the microUSB connector of the Asus MeMO Pad 7 peripherals, however, the microUSB-OTG cable (with peripheral support) will have to be purchased separately.

On the right side of the Asus MeMO Pad 7 tablet there are power and volume keys, on the left - a microSD slot for a memory card and a slide-out tray with a SIM card slot. You can remove it by pressing the recessed button with a special paper clip included in the delivery set. The stereo speakers are on the bottom of the tablet.

The polymer battery holds a charge quite well. In the settings menu of the Asus MeMO Pad 7 tablet, there is a section that allows you to flexibly adjust the power consumption mode. In video viewing mode with Wi-Fi off, the charge lasts for 7 hours, with active web surfing, watching videos and reading from the screen - for 6.5 hours.

Customer reviews of the tablet Asus MeMO Pad 7

Buyers note the solid assembly of the tablet, precise fit of parts and the absence of backlash and squeak. The device fits comfortably in the palm of your hand. 5 tablet color options allow anyone to choose a model of their own. Heavy games run without delays and sites with a lot of graphics open. The battery holds a charge well. The tablet provides excellent 4G connectivity and works well as a navigator with GPS and GLONASS.

Among the shortcomings, we can note the screen fading in the sun and glare on the glass from bright light sources. Installation of the SIM card is complicated by both the recessed eject button and the design of the tray. The sound from the speakers is clear and rich, but not loud enough.

Below are screenshots of the CPU-Z tablet ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 (ME173X) | Design

Here the tablet can only be praised, it is not a typical black nondescript case, but a pretty decent-looking device - a strict black front and white plastic with a relief in the form of the company name on the back. There are also all the main elements - the rear camera at the top (in portrait orientation), on the top end there is a micro-USB port and an audio output, on the left end there is a slot for micro-SD cards, at the bottom of the stereo speakers, on the right is a volume rocker and a power button. Traditionally for devices from ASUS, the company logo is duplicated under the screen in gray letters. Of course, we did not get anything revolutionary, but there are differences from the usual and boring design, and significant ones.

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 (ME173X) | Software

ASUS has always taken this point seriously, a large number of proprietary applications were a feature of all devices. The most useful ones are ASUS Artist (a simple "drawing" like Paint), Splendid (various modes of the graphic matrix of the screen), Studio (an application for working with photos), To-Do (scheduler) AudioWizard (an application for setting the sound playback mode), WebStorage (analogue of Google Drive and Yandex.Disk, designed specifically for ASUS users), Story (creating and editing notes to photos). Also note the large number third party applications - Amazon Kindle, App Backup, App Locker, Buddy Buzz, Zinio. Of course, there are not enough readers, Google Books and Press Reader cannot serve as a worthy and full-fledged replacement, and it would not hurt to add games either, although everything here is at the discretion of the user. Apparently, the company decided to completely leave the choice to you. On the other hand, there are many utilitarian applications that are very useful in everyday use, so we still think that everything is fine here.

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 (ME173X) | Settings

As usual, we were not offended in the choice of settings, here is everything you might need. It is also worth noting the unusual design - instead of the usual black and white, there are different shades of gray here, due to the lower contrast it is more convenient to use in the dark.

In settings wireless networks we can see support for WPS - direct connection to the router "one click", as in the previously tested e-book. Also, the tablet can work with Wi-Fi Direct and supports intelligent power consumption in sleep mode.

Of particular note is the ability to share your PC's internet connection when the tablet is connected via a USB cable. This differs from the usual use of the tablet as a modem, but considering that this model does not have a 3G module, then it looks quite logical if there is no way to get the Internet directly from the tablet via Wi-Fi.

There are many useful options for everyday use in ASUS Customized Settings. For example, by long pressing the button for recent applications, you can take a screenshot and select the format in which it will be saved. Besides, you can choose your own ASUS notification panel instead of the standard one, it seemed to us more convenient than the stock one.

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 (ME173X) | Browser

The built-in browser works well and is fast. There is support for Flash Player 11 and HTML5. Thanks to this, you can easily watch videos in the browser, the high data transfer rate Wi-Fi will also allow you to watch movies in streaming. Thanks to the high-resolution screen, even small text is comfortable to read, so you won't have the problems that arise with low-resolution matrices when a lot of imagination is required to read the text.

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 (ME173X) | Music

To listen to music, only one application is preinstalled - Play Music... It supports sorting by album, shuffling, and searching downloaded tracks, which will allow you to quickly find your favorite music, rather than search for it among all the tracks.

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 (ME173X) | Video

Since April 2013, we have been using a new testing methodology for testing multimedia devices. It is split into several parts.

  • Popular formats - common video formats and codecs. It is recommended that their support be evaluated first.
  • DVD and Blu-ray Disc Images - check playback of full DVD / Blu-ray images, including menus. Recommended if you store your media library as images
  • Rare formats - less common formats, but still relevant
  • Ultra HD 2K and 4K - formats with an eye to the future. In 2013, ultra-high definition video will gain popularity

The results of video testing with a standard player leave much to be desired, the manufacturer should seriously think about this issue. Apparently ASUS decided that you can always install another player.

You cannot do without installing a third-party player, which we recommend doing. After installing MX Player and codecs for it, almost all formats were played, except for the most difficult videos. The table shows the results with the installed MX Player

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 (ME173X) | Camera

The camera of this tablet deserves a separate and detailed consideration. The manufacturer has added many software features that allow you to take high quality pictures even in difficult conditions. From the basic settings - change ISO, focus mode, auto exposure, anti-flicker mode on monitors. Exposure, photo resolution and aspect ratio (5 MP and 4: 3 by default), camera effects (vintage / grayscale / negative, etc.), camera mode selection are separately available for adjusting. The most useful modes here are Vivid and Night. As you might guess, the former is used for shooting bright objects, such as a lamp or a candle, and the latter is for night shots. For the latter, it is required to hold the tablet still during shooting, since the shutter is open for several seconds, and otherwise the picture will be heavily blurred, but despite this, even if the hands "walked" a little, the quality is still high. The front camera does not work miracles, but it fulfills its characteristics with dignity. Below you can see examples of photos and videos captured with the tablet camera.

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 (ME173X) | Performance

CPU performance

We tested the performance of the 4-core Cortex A9 processor of the ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 using Linpack. Results are reported in millions of floating point operations per second (MFLOPS).

Despite the quad-core processor, the results are slightly worse than even dual-core systems, so in applications that require a processor (office, etc.), be prepared for the fact that the work may not be ideal. Although the ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 tablet copes with normal applications without problems.

Overall system performance

We used the Smartbench 2012 1.0 benchmark to assess overall system performance. This benchmark is very similar to the 3DMark and SysMark packages in that it provides simple and convenient performance indices for two categories: productivity applications and games. On the other hand, the synthetic benchmark may not accurately reflect the real performance of applications and games.

You can compare tablet results with other smartphones and tablets at http://smartphonebenchmarks.com/

As in the Linpack benchmark, the system performance is on par with dual-core systems, but the graphics benchmarks showed results on the level of quad-core tablets, which we expected, since the tablet has a PowerVR SGX544 GPU, like on many other popular 4-core models.

JavaScript performance

SunSpider is a JavaScript benchmark that demonstrates both the performance of a tablet's JavaScript engine and the processing power of (to a lesser extent) hardware. Poor JavaScript implementation on a very fast tablet can blur the entire platform's performance. And at the same time, the great JavaScript implementation will make efficient use of even slow systems. However, today the main implementations of JavaScript engines are getting closer to each other, developers are borrowing all the best ideas. JavaScript tests are single threaded due to the nature of browsers. SunSpider correctly evaluates CPU-sensitive tasks found in real web applications.

Below are the results of SunSpider 1.0 on tablets and android phones. Android devices use the Google V8 JavaScript engine.

The results are not record-breaking, although they are within the normal range. Significant execution time of scripts is typical for tablets without optimization or with weak hardware, so we advise you to use a more modern or lighter browser.

AnTuTu

We've added the results of the popular AnTuTu benchmark. It has regular updates, the current version at the time of the review is 4.1, the results of 4.x do not coincide with 3.x, so we presented only those tablets in which the new version was tested.

As you can see from the AnTuTu results, the tablet does not set records, by no means can we say that it is a quad-core. On the other hand, MTK chips offer lower power consumption, so you can hope for a longer battery life than Rockchip tablets with the same performance.

Relative Benchmark

This test was created "for growth", no available Android devices can show really high results. The graphics level is much higher than the gaming average, so even if the results here are not impressive, in real games the performance can be quite good. 60 fps in this test is already the Xbox 360.

The results are low, although they "creep away" from zero by a noticeable value, after all, 5.5 FPS is at least something. However, you will hardly be able to play serious shooters, the game turns into a slideshow.

Network bandwidth

We tested network performance using the IxChariot benchmark as well as an 802.11 b / g / n router with 1 Gbps ports. The tablet was about 1 meter away from the access point. We tested the maximum available network mode (802.11g or 802.11n), at this time no other active transmissions were carried out, no pronounced interference was found in the network coverage area either.

The network throughput is average, but I would like to have a higher level than 15 Mbps. Although this speed will be enough, for example, to watch streaming video.

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 (ME173X) | Game tests

The test results do not always correspond to real performance, so we decided to carry out tests in real conditions.

For this, three applications were chosen:

  • Cut The Rope is a casual game with simple and beautiful animation
  • Epic Citadel - Unreal engine demo with built-in benchmark
  • NFS Most Wanted is a modern game with "powerful" graphics

These tests validate performance under various conditions and provide real-world performance measurements.

In games, frames per second (fps) are an important factor. The higher it is, the smoother the game feels. Frame rates below 30 fps can lead to jerks and other unpleasant consequences. Frame rates below 15 fps turn the game into a slideshow, you can hardly enjoy it. We took the average frame rate during the test run in the selected game.

Cut the rope

We decided to test the tablet on regular casual games that many users play in order to have a good time. Since the user can play them for hours, a good frame per second (fps) rate is an important indicator, because not everyone can watch a twitchy picture for many hours. We tested the tablet operation with Cut the Rope HD.

The results are not bad, but they cannot be called remarkable, we hope that in more serious tests the tablet will behave adequately.

Epic citadel

We have added the Epic Citadel game test, which is a demonstration of the capabilities of the Unreal engine from Infinity Blade for Android OS. The test has different .apk and cache for different GPUs, so you need to take your versions for the test. The test was carried out only in High Quality mode. We excluded the High Performance mode from the tests, since the results differ slightly, and we are interested in the performance of the tablet relative to other models. You can see the results below.

The results are not bad, we can say that it will be comfortable to play games on the Unreal engine. 23 fps in Ultra High is, of course, not 50 fps in High, but it is also quite enough for an acceptable game.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted

To test the performance of "heavy" and demanding games, we chose NFS: Most Wanted. To install this game, you have to download the cache for each device separately, it was not possible to find something common for devices even with the same GPU, and the cache itself "weighs" 2 GB, an archive of 600 MB is downloaded. Therefore, get ready for the fact that you will not be able to play immediately after installation, you will have to pump out the cache.

The results are very high, higher than anything we have had before. However, the previous leader used the same GPU, so similar results could be expected.

In general, according to the results of gaming tests, we can say that you can play almost everything except very difficult games. But you can run into a nuisance in the form of a lack of optimization of the game for the tablet GPU - the tests show that the results are very different from the usual proportions.

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 (ME173X) | Battery life

We tested the tablet for battery life in a variety of use cases. Since the brightness of the screen is low and the sound in the speakers is quiet, we measured it at maximum brightness and maximum sound in the headphones. Wi-Fi was turned on.

The results are very good, to be honest, even higher than we expected. The only drawback is that charging is performed only from USB, but even in this mode it goes quite fast. Many "budget" competitors on the market offer half the battery life and even lower, so we were satisfied with the results. You can take your tablet on a trip and not be afraid that it will run out on the way. Unless, of course, you will play something heavy at maximum brightness, but just reading a book or watching a movie on the tablet will last half a day. In standby mode, the tablet lay for almost a week and was only half discharged, so it is not necessary to turn it off. It lasted three days with Wi-Fi turned on, so even in this mode it is not necessary to turn it off to save battery.

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 (ME173X) | Conclusion

According to the test results, the tablet performed well. ASUS once again convincingly proved that it can make not only premium devices, but also excellent budget models. Moreover, the low price is achieved through quite acceptable compromises - it is not associated with poor workmanship or poor manufacturer support, unlike many other inexpensive competitors.

We got a really solid product, in which there is not a drop of excess, but it is hard to say that something is missing at such a price. In our case, it is even difficult to find close examples for comparison, since usually the price is much higher. Of the most approximate, we can name and, but in neither case will we get the same support from the manufacturer, and the former is noticeably weaker, and the latter is noticeably more powerful than the ASUS MeMO Pad HD7.

In general, earlier we received either more powerful and expensive or cheaper and weaker tablets, while ASUS with the MeMO Pad line occupies an almost empty niche of "medium" budget tablets that can be recommended to those who do not want to overpay, but also do not want to get a tablet that you will want to get rid of after a few hours of use.

We get a perfectly balanced one, which has excellent parameters for its price and quite good against the general background, and at the same time is still an inexpensive gadget, which other manufacturers cannot boast of, who are forced to rely either on the price or on differences from the "gray mass". Here, averaging is taken as a standard, all the good is taken from it and all the bad is removed. We saw something like this in, the same low price, the same average for those times characteristics, but the usability and versatility of the application were at their best, despite the non-promoted company, the absence of an outstanding design, etc. They really wanted to use it, like the ASUS MeMO Pad HD7.

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 advantages:

  • Reasonable price
  • Good performance for this value
  • A large number of settings and powerful technical support from the manufacturer with frequent and large-scale updates
  • Great camera
  • Very long battery life and fast charging

Disadvantages of ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7:

  • Lack of flash
  • USB charging only
  • Third-party programs are required for normal video playback
