How much RAM is needed for normal computer operation? How much RAM do you need for your computer? Why do you need 8 GB of RAM

Recently, prices for modules random access memory dropped significantly.
This leads to the fact that for the same money the user can buy not 1 GB of memory, but 4 or more.

But there is another problem here: 32-bit operating systems are not able to use more than 3.25 GB of memory for the needs of one application.
Everything that exceeds this threshold is used to ensure the operation of components, and in case of a large volume, it is simply idle.
64-bit editions of operating systems help to solve this problem.
However, questions of expediency and economic efficiency remain.

Let's consider in practice the effect of additional gigabytes of memory on the performance and speed of the computer's response.
For the experiment, we used a computer based on a productive intel processor Core 2 Duo Е8400 @ 3.6 GHz with an installed operating system windows system Vista Ultimate SP1 64 bit.

RAM TEAM 2x2048MB 1066MHz (TXDD4096M1066HC5DCD) was used in sets of 4 GB each, i.e., first tests were carried out on a computer with 4 GB of RAM, then repeated with 8 GB of installed memory.

The amount of RAM used during normal office work (Word, Excel, 1C, Avant 50-60 tabs, Firefox 15-20 tabs, mail, Folding, simple graphics editing) was 2.0-2.2 GB, and it remains.
After fully loaded operating system the amount of memory occupied was 1.3 GB in both cases.

On very rare occasions (usually when defragmenting and running an antivirus program), the memory usage increased to 2.8-3 GB.
Again, both with 4 GB and 8 GB of memory.
In games, the maximum memory usage did not exceed 3.4-3.5 GB.
Under no ordinary conditions of using a computer did the amount of used memory come close to 4 GB.

Next, we will consider the effect of additional RAM on the download speed of programs.
IN Windows Vista there is SuperFetch technology, which tracks which applications the user uses most often and loads them into the cache memory in advance.

When a user launches an application whose components are already in RAM, the application launches significantly faster.
Moreover, if memory is required for applications, the required amount is immediately released by the cache and allocated to the application.

Indeed, the loading time of the GRID game to the first clip with 4 GB of memory was 14 seconds, with 8 GB - 12 seconds (a performance increase of 14.3%).
Loading the operating system from the moment you press the "Power" button to turn it on Windows Live Messenger with 4 GB of memory is 101 seconds, with 8 GB of memory - 94 seconds (6.9% performance gain).
Shutdown in both cases takes 31 seconds.

Load times for other commonly used applications have also decreased slightly.
The same programs that are rarely used (and therefore their data is not in the SuperFetch cache) took the same amount of time to load.

Thus, an increase in the amount of RAM from 4 GB to 8 GB led to an acceleration in loading the operating system and applications by 10-15%.
Memory usage has not increased.

Consequently, 4 GB of RAM is enough for an ordinary home computer, which is used to work with office applications, as well as games.
8 GB in such a system will not bring any significant advantages, but they eat up a certain amount of money, which would be better spent on a more efficient processor or video card.

It is possible that in some specific tasks (for example, image processing in Photoshop or video rendering), the performance gain from the additional 4 GB of memory would be more significant.

This question, posed in the title of today's post, has probably been asked by every computer user. At least once - but asked ...

Let's finally answer it!

Memory in a computer plays one of the most important roles. Processor + memory + graphics card are the three highest performing components of a computer and determine overall performance.

Memory performance, in turn, is determined by its characteristics: standard, frequency, latency ...

There are two memory standards today: DDR2 and DRR3. There is practically no tangible difference between them, if we talk about performance.

If we consider each standard separately, for example, DDR2 memory can operate at different frequencies - 533, 667 and 800 MHz (we do not consider 1066 MHz and higher - not all motherboards support such memory, and it is practically no different from 800 MHz ). DDR3 also works at different frequencies - 1066, 1333, 1600. These are the most popular today. And the same - there is no particular difference between them.

As for parameters such as latency, I would say that this does not affect performance at all.

Therefore, a much more important parameter of memory is not its standard or speed mode, but the volume.

Volume is practically the most important memory parameter today. The performance of the computer as a whole largely depends on the amount of memory. So consider, most popular desktop configurations for today:

2 GB

This volume will be enough for simple office work under Windows XP and 7: text, spreadsheets, Internet, viewing photos and videos. If you want to upgrade to Windows 7, you will have to add more memory. Two gigabytes for serious work running Windows 7 is not enough.

The system itself will work very well, Microsoft Office, your favorite communication programs, players, etc. will also work without difficulty. You can even edit DVD photos and videos.

But I mean heavy loads: try opening 3-4 high resolution photos in Photoshop and working with them at the same time. But this is exactly what, for example, designers working over the Internet have to do.

The same applies to those who work professionally with video, or amateurs: who regularly edit and process video from their camcorder.

You will immediately notice that there is not enough memory: the system will react sluggishly to commands, from time to time "think" ... This can be annoying and interfere with your work, especially if you are used to doing everything quickly at the computer.

Another thing worth mentioning is that if there is not enough physical memory, the system will access the paging file on the hard disk. It will send to this file everything that does not fit into physical memory. Here lies the reason for possible "braking".

If we talk about a laptop, then here the lack of memory will also be expressed in reduced battery life. The reason is the same - the system will often access the paging file, therefore, hDD will work more often and waste energy.

4 GB

We can say that the amount of memory is optimal for today. Office work and some resource-intensive tasks: games, viewing and editing photos / videos, simultaneous work with several programs, incl. and under Windows 7 ... For all this, 4 GB is quite enough.

Even so, the system will still access the paging file, albeit significantly less than if the computer had 2 GB of memory installed. We can say - they are reduced to a minimum.

For a laptop, 4GB of memory is practically perfect option: minimum requests to the paging file (only if some very resource-intensive program is running), and, therefore, minimum energy consumption of the hard disk.

Even if you have enough 2 GB in a laptop, I would still recommend installing 4. In this case, the laptop will run a little more on battery power. And if you do not run any resource-intensive programs on your laptop, you can turn off the swap file altogether, and thereby add agility to the laptop.

As for the price, 4 GB of memory will cost an average of 3,500-4,000 rubles.

8 GB

An ideal option and just a necessity if you have to work with resource-intensive programs, edit HD video from your camcorder and work in parallel with several applications.

In this case, the system does not access the paging file on the disk at all (just in case, you can even turn it off - there will be enough memory in any case).

However, such a large volume makes sense if your computer has a high-performance core processor i7 or Phenom II X4. With 8GB of storage, you can use its full potential. It won't be held back by a slow paging hard drive. It is with 8 GB of RAM that the performance of such a computer will be maximum.

And if the PC has a mid-range or budget processor, then it makes no sense to install 8 GB, because here another factor comes into play: if a high-performance processor needs such a volume in order to fully use all its resources, then a budget processor simply does not need such a volume, since its power reserve is small, and it will be exhausted already, say, 4 GB of memory (of course, it all depends on specific model) and the extra four GB won't add much speed. Even if you want to speed up, say, the processing of HD video on a computer, then in this case everything will run into a slow processor and not a lack of memory.

Not everything is so smooth with laptops. Not all models support expanding memory to this amount. As a rule, in laptops the business is limited to 4 GB. However, laptops are, by their very nature, not designed for resource-intensive tasks such as editing and encoding HD video and modern games. Therefore, in a laptop, 4 GB is quite enough.

At the moment, almost all modern motherboards support 8 GB of DDR2 or DDR3 memory. If you load your PC to the maximum, if your performance is low all the time and if you have the opportunity to upgrade the memory subsystem to 8 GB, then I highly recommend that you do it.

8 GB of memory will cost about 7000-8000 rubles.

The other day I was convinced myself that 8 GB of memory significantly adds responsiveness to a computer. My PC had 4GB of DDR3-1333 memory installed and I decided to install as much more.

The choice fell on the PATRIOT DDR3-1333 memory kit. You can see photos of memory sticks in the gallery:

I immediately noticed that the computer was even more responsive than before. Now, even if I process HD video from a camcorder, the system does not access the paging file, as was the case with 4 GB of memory on the system.

No matter how I load the computer, it still reacts quickly to commands and no braking is observed. The main benefit you get after adding memory is responsiveness.

Whether you open a folder, launch another program for parallel operation, or perform any operations in the program itself - the computer does all this instantly and quickly - without any “hesitation”.

And the more programs you have to work with in parallel, the more noticeable this advantage is.

For example, here are the programs with which I often work at the same time and which are constantly running in the background:

  • Windows Mail
  • Opera (a couple of dozen open tabs)
  • Skype
  • ICQ (one number)
  • QIP Infium (second number)
  • Dropbox
  • Kaspersky Internet Security 2010
  • PuntoSwitcher
  • DownloadMaster
  • Bittorrent
  • Internet Explorer
  • Adobe Dreamweaver CS4
  • Microsoft SharePoint Designer 2007
  • Microsoft OneNote 2010
  • ABBYY Lingvo X3
  • Windows Media Player
  • Total Commander

Plus, system processes also require memory. Therefore, if you also load your computer to the maximum, be sure - 8 GB of memory will be very useful.

Smartphones with 8 GB of RAM started to appear on the market only in 2017, but quickly gained popularity. Interestingly, one of the pioneers was the Chinese manufacturer OnePlus, whose flagship solutions are much cheaper than the top models of the A-brands. In a poll that we launched back in the summer, when we created 68Bit to find out how much RAM a modern user needs, the 8 GB option came in second with 23% of the vote. Honestly, we assumed that the second line would go to the 6 GB variant. It would seem, who can need so much memory ?! Not every computer had such volumes 5 years ago, but here smartphones flaunt them. Probably the reason for this interest in 8 GB was the OnePlus 5, which gave this volume for relatively little money.

Although we still believe that such amounts of RAM are simply not needed mobile phone, the market dictates different rules. Last year, only flagship solutions had 4 GB of RAM, this year - a huge number of Chinese smartphones up to 10,000-15,000 rubles. It is expected that next year smartphones with 8 GB of RAM will become the absolute norm, and smartphones with 6 GB will start filling the budget class. Until 2018 has arrived, there are not that many smartphones on the market that are equipped with 8GB of RAM, so we decided to tell you about them. Perhaps you want to please yourself with the most powerful device for the New Year.

OnePlus 5 is by far the most interesting decision in the ranking. best smartphones with 8 GB of RAM. The Chinese company borrowed the design from the iPhone 7 Plus, which some will like, some will not. The body of the smartphone is entirely made of metal, the OnePlus 5 is quite ergonomic and pretty. Naturally, it stands out for its very powerful "filling". A top processor, huge amounts of RAM, correct optimization of the software part and not the highest screen resolution allowed OnePlus 5 to be at the top of the top of the most powerful Android smartphones according to AnTuTu.

But the device is not attracted by the performance. It is equipped with a dual camera, which algorithms are also borrowed from iPhone 7 Plus Interestingly, in many ways, OnePlus 5 bypasses the American competitor, which allowed it to take its place among. It has a quality display, impressive timing autonomous work demonstrates the battery, the device did not remain without modern "chips", including USB Type-C and.

At the time of compiling the rating of the best smartphones with 8 GB of RAM, the OnePlus 5T is preparing for release, which should receive a frameless 18: 9 screen. Naturally, the new product will be presented with at least 8 GB of RAM (probably all 10 GB).

Be that as it may, OnePlus 5 will not lose its relevance. That's just reportedly his production is suspended, which means that only stocks remain in warehouses. Given the price of the OnePlus 5, now is the time to order. Hurry up!

In AnTuTu, the older version of OnePlus 5 is gaining over 180,000 points.

Nubia Z17 / Z17S

In the summer of 2017, ZTE launched its flagship Nubia Z17, which received the most advanced processor from Qualcomm at the time, as well as impressive amounts of memory, reaching 8 GB. Already in the fall, the company decided to slightly update the flagship line by presenting. In terms of hardware, smartphones do not differ, but a more recent solution has received an almost frameless screen. Changes also affected cameras. The newer model now has a dual front camera, which will appeal to selfie lovers.

Both smartphones take a place in the flagship segment, offering a truly premium look and impressive performance. Naturally, it looks more modern, which got the 5.73-inch display with thin bezels. Both solutions can boast of high image quality, which is the main one, which is front camera... Of course, smartphones are presented in versions with 8 GB of RAM. Together with the top-end chipset, the system demonstrates high performance in any task.

In AnTuTu, both Nubia Z17 solutions score over 170,000 points.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Special Edition

Fresh from Xiaomi, which has become even more frameless and even more powerful than its predecessor, which, in fact, stands at the origins of the trend to reduce the frames. In the top of the best smartphones with 8 GB of RAM, we included the Special Edition solution, since the usual Mi Mix 2 is presented with a volume of 6 GB.

In fact, you won't notice the difference in performance unless you start running the appropriate tests. Smartphones are very nimble. On top of that, they are also beautiful. The FHD + screen occupies almost the entire front area, leaving a small strip at the bottom. The main camera of the smartphone is represented by a single sensor, which even surprised. It uses the same sensor as the Xiaomi Mi6, so the photos are pretty high quality. Following the example of other companies, the manufacturer ditched the 3.5 mm audio jack for headphones.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Special Edition is a really beautiful and flagship smartphone. However, we would recommend considering the 6GB option. You will lose a little in productivity, but you will save a lot. In addition, for the price of the Special Edition (even slightly less), you can buy the original Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 with 256 GB of storage.

In AnTuTu, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Special Edition scores over 170,000 points.

Archos diamond omega

No, this is not the Nubia Z17S. Here is a rather similar smartphone from another Chinese company. Well, how pretty similar, identical in features and design. And it was presented shortly after the announcement of the Nubia Z17S. It is not on sale yet, but it will appear in the very near future.

Archos Diamond Omega earned a place in the ranking of the best smartphones with 8 GB of RAM, despite the similarity with the eminent competitor. Now only one version is known, which will have 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of permanent memory. The price is expected to be around 500 euros (34,000-35,000 rubles), making it one of the most affordable flagships with impressive performance. The smartphone received, which is important, an almost frameless 5.73-inch screen. Like flagships from better-known brands, the Archos Diamond Omega has a modern uSB port Type-C with fast charging support and NFC interface.

The Archos Diamond Omega is definitely worth a look. The smartphone is really flagship, beautiful and inexpensive. However, you should not chase after him at the very start of sales. Wait a bit, take a closer look, read reviews, it will probably be even cheaper.

In AnTuTu, the Archos Diamond Omega scores over 170,000 points.

An unusual smartphone, which was the very first one to acquire 8 GB of RAM. They showed it back in early 2017, so he got the Snapdragon 821, which at that time was still the oldest in the line. The main focus of the manufacturer is Asus ZenFone AR made on. The smartphone got the proprietary Project Tango platform from Google, as well as a set of necessary depth and motion sensors. It also supports Daydream (another platform from Google, but for working with virtual reality).

The screen of Asus ZenFone AR has a high resolution, "filling", despite the fact that the processor is 2016, still copes with any task. The smartphone has a good camera and a pretty stylish design. However, we will not recommend the Asus ZenFone AR to everyone. First, the smartphone is designed to work with VR and AR, which not everyone needs. Secondly, ZenFone AR is worth, like many flagships of A-brands with more interesting characteristics, not to mention top solutions from China. Be that as it may, it deserves its place among the best phones with 8GB of RAM.

Random access memory is one of the main components of stable computer operation. Without it, the work of the PC is impossible, and without a sufficient amount of RAM, the user will not be able to run some programs. Consider how RAM works, how to increase the amount of RAM and other points.

First, let's figure out what it means to reduce RAM or RAM. In Russian it sounds like "Random Access Memory", and in English - "Random Access Memory". The peculiarities of the part lie in the fact that it works only when the computer is turned on. RAM stores data processed by the processor and executable codes.

The principle of operation of RAM is as follows:

  1. Each memory location has its own row and column.
  2. When running, the computer sends a signal to one of the lines.
  3. Due to the electrical signal, the transistor opens.
  4. The sent charge from the capacitor is transferred to one of the available columns to which the sensitive amplifier is connected.
  5. The flow supplied by the discharged capacitor is registered through the amplifier, after which the required command is sent.

Due to the fact that RAM works on semiconductors, it cannot store information in the absence of current.

How to increase RAM in a computer and laptop?

In short, there are several ways to increase the amount of RAM. The main one is adding new strips to the motherboard. Alternatively, you can change the paging file data. Let's consider each method in more detail.

Expansion with memory modules

For stable operation, modern computers need at least 2 GB of RAM, depending on the operating system installed. For example, the same amount is required for Windows 10 64 bit. The main way to increase this indicator is to add or replace RAM strips.

It is important to understand that the module must fit a computer or laptop. For example, PCs with older processors do not support 1666 MHz RAM. The same goes for motherboards - most of the older models cannot work with parts with more than 4 GB of memory.

In order not to miscalculate, the PC owner needs to know the model name of the motherboard and processor.

To check the processor, you need to perform slightly different steps:

In this way, you can check the compatibility of the RAM with other parts of the PC.

How to determine the type of RAM

It is also important to know the type of device before purchasing new devices. If you buy the wrong bar, you will have to return it.

There are 4 types of RAM:

  • Ddr1 - the most "ancient";
  • Ddr2 is also deprecated;

  • Ddr3 - used now;
  • Ddr4 is the newest development:

There are several ways to determine which type is installed on a computer. First of all, you need to familiarize yourself with the sticker on the front side of the strap, if any. Most often, it indicates the type of memory, volume and other information. If the type is not directly specified, then other markings can be used. For example, if it says "PC3" then it is ddr3, and if "PC2" it is ddr2.

The safest method is to look at the cutouts between the yellow pads. The diagram below will help you figure it out:

The last method: using a special software to scan installed components. For example, for this, "AIDA64".

Laptops use the same markings, but a slightly different scheme. The slats are much smaller.

Installing RAM modules

First of all, you need to open the computer case from the side where you can access the motherboard. Required completely turn off the computer, pull the wire out of the socket and disconnect it by holding down the "Start" button. Depending on the type of case used, you will have to unscrew the screws on the back of the PC and dismantle the cover, remove the latches, or just open it like a door.

Find the RAM slots on the motherboard. They should look something like this:

If there are already modules, instead of which new ones should be installed, you need to dismantle them. To do this, press the latches on the sides and remove the strips. It is necessary to be very careful as this is a very sensitive, fragile part.

Now take a new RAM and install it in a free slot. To do this, insert the strip so that the groove matches the protrusion in the connector. You need to lightly press on the module so that it fully fits into the connector. During installation, a click may be heard - this means that the latches are automatically latched and the memory is installed correctly. If this did not happen, but the bar is installed, manually "snap" it.

Paired RAM is recommended to be inserted into slots of the same color, if any. On most motherboards, connectors are painted in two colors - 2 in one, 2 in the other. Installing two identical parts in slots with the same coloring will allow the devices to work in dual channel mode.

After that, close the case cover, tighten the bolts and connect the PC to electricity. We try to start the computer - if the system starts up as usual, then everything is done correctly. If there is any doubt about the functionality, it is recommended to check the new parts with.

In laptops, the principle is almost the same, but there are slight differences. First you need to turn off your laptop and disconnect it from the network. Next, we remove the battery - depending on the device model, you will have to unscrew the screws on back cover or use another method to open the case. After removing the battery, you need to press the power button - this will get rid of static charges.

To find the RAM slot, you need to remove the panel on the bottom of the device. There may be several panels, therefore, for reliability, it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the documents received upon purchase or search the network for disassembly of a particular model.

Most often, two slots for RAM are available. The budget models boast only one connector. More expensive devices may have more room to increase the amount of RAM. To remove the old strips, you need to open the latches on the sides. Once they are released, the part rises at a 45 ° angle.

Carefully insert the new module at the same angle, making sure that it fits correctly into the connector. Then you need to press from top to bottom on the bar so that the latches on the sides automatically close. Then we return all the panels to their place, install the battery and close the case cover. We try to turn on the device. If there are doubts about the performance of the laptop, we check it using

Alternative ways to increase RAM

In addition to installing new components, you can use other methods that increase the computer's RAM.

Expanding RAM with a USB flash drive

The simplest and affordable way add RAM to a computer or laptop - use a USB flash drive.

Starting with Windows 7, it is possible to use the utility "Ready Boost".

  1. First you need to insert a USB flash drive into a USB port on your computer.
  2. We open "Conductor" and right-click on the name of the flash drive in the left menu.
  3. Choose an item "Properties" and go to section "Ready Boost".
  4. We put a tick in the "Use this device" item.
  5. We indicate the volume of the flash drive that will be used as RAM, you can indicate the entire volume at once.
  6. Click "Apply", then "OK" and close the window.

This method is good because it does not require additional costs if you have a free flash drive. Before purchasing new modules, you can safely use it.

Changing BIOS settings

Change bIOS settings needed to overclock RAM. In general, the main task of BIOS is to enable the user to customize the operation of components, a computer, and so on.

  1. Reboot the computer and press the key to enter the BIOS - "Del", "Esc", "F2" etc. You can press several keys at once so that later you do not restart the PC again.
  2. Push "Ctrl + F1", the advanced settings window will open, if it does not exit - go to the item "Advanced BIOS Features".
  3. Choose an item "System Memory Multiplier" or "Advanced DRAM Configuration".
  4. In section "DRAM Timing Selectable" set the mode "Manual", that is, manual settings.
  5. We save the changes, if desired, experiment with changing the timings.
  6. We restart the computer, change the settings in special programs (for example, AIDA64).

Thus, you can customize your PC for yourself. It is important to understand that changes in the settings should be made by a person who at least a little understands this.

We hope that after that you will understand the principle of increasing the computer's RAM. If you still have questions, be sure to ask them in the comments!

Good day.

Today's article is devoted to RAM, or rather its amount on our computers (RAM is often shortened - RAM). RAM plays an important role in the operation of the computer, if there is not enough memory - the PC starts to slow down, games and applications are reluctant to open, the picture on the monitor starts to "twitch", the load on the hard disk increases. In the article, we will just dwell on issues related to memory: its types, how much memory is needed, what it affects.

How to find out the amount of RAM?

1) The easiest way to do this is to go to "my computer" and right-click anywhere in the window. Then select "properties" from the context menu of the explorer. You can also open the control panel, enter "system" in the search box. See screenshot below.

The amount of RAM is indicated next to the performance index, under the processor information.

4GB - the amount of RAM. The bigger, the better. But do not forget that if the processor in the system is not so powerful, then there is no point in installing a large amount of RAM. In general, the slats can be of completely different sizes: from 1GB to 32 and more. See below for volume.

1600Mhz PC3-12800 - Working frequency ( throughput). This plate will help to deal with this indicator:

DDR3 modules

Name

Bus frequency

Bandwidth

As you can see from the table, the bandwidth of such RAM is 12800 MB / s. Not the fastest today, but as practice shows, for the speed of a computer, the amount of this very memory is much more important.

The amount of RAM on the computer

1 GB - 2 GB

Today this amount of RAM can be used only on office computers: for editing documents, browsing the Internet, mail. Of course, you can run games with this amount of RAM, but only the simplest ones.

By the way, with such a volume, you can install Windows 7, it will work fine. However, if you open five documents, the system may begin to "think": it will not react so sharply and zealously to your commands, the picture on the screen may start to "twitch" (especially when it comes to games).

Also, if there is not enough RAM, the computer will use: some of the information from the RAM that is not currently being used will be written to the hard disk, and then, as needed, read from it. Obviously, in such a state of affairs, there will be an increased load on the hard disk, and this can also greatly affect the speed of the user.

4 GB

The most popular amount of RAM in recent times. Many modern PCs and laptops running Windows 7/8 are equipped with 4 GB of memory. This volume is enough for normal work with office applications, it will allow you to run almost all modern games (albeit not at maximum settings), watch HD video.

8 GB

This amount of memory is more and more popular every day. It allows you to open dozens of applications, while the computer behaves very "smart". In addition, with this amount of memory, you can run many modern games at high settings.

However, it should be noted right away. That this amount of memory will be justified if you have a powerful processor installed in your system: Core i7 or Phenom II X4. Then he will be able to use the memory one hundred percent - and the paging file will not have to be used at all, thereby the speed of work increases significantly. In addition, the load on the hard disk decreases, and power consumption decreases (relevant for a laptop).

By the way, the opposite rule also applies here: if you have a budget processor, then there is no point in putting 8 GB of memory. It's just that the processor will handle some amount of RAM, say 3-4 GB, and the rest of the memory will add absolutely no speed to your computer.
